Format Preservation
Benchmark
A repeatable, transparent methodology for measuring how well document layout survives translation. We test tables, images, fonts, spacing, and page breaks across PDF, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Why This Matters
A perfect translation is useless if the layout breaks
Clients can't use documents where tables are scrambled, images are misplaced, or page breaks destroy readability.
Reformatting is the hidden cost
Teams spend hours fixing layout issues. That time cost often exceeds the translation cost itself.
We measure so you don't have to guess
Our benchmark gives you objective data to make informed decisions about translation tools.
Format Retention by File Type
Our Methodology
Simple, transparent, and repeatable. Here's exactly how we test.
Select Files
We use a standardized set of invoices, tables, manuals, slide decks, and multi-column PDFs.
Translate
Same language pair (EN to DE, FR, ES, JA) across all tools to ensure fair comparison.
Compare
Side-by-side visual review with pixel-level comparison and element inspection.
Score
Each file scored against our 15-point checklist. Results averaged by file type.
Layout Fidelity Checklist
Every translated document is evaluated against these 7 categories, covering 15+ individual checks.

What We Publish
Transparency is key. We share everything needed to validate our results.
- Summary score per file type with confidence intervals
- 2-3 annotated before/after screenshots per test
- Known edge cases and limitations (scanned PDFs, heavy graphics)
- Methodology updates and version history
Limitations
We optimize for format fidelity, but complex scanned PDFs or heavily graphic-dependent documents can still require manual review. Our benchmark reflects typical business documents, not edge cases with unusual layouts.
